GTCI will be Participating with Local Conservation GroupsGTCI WILL BE PARTICIPATING WITH LOCAL CONSERVATION GROUPS TO RECOMMEND TO THE BREVARD COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS THAT NOW IS THE TIME FOR COUNTY GOVERNMENTS TO GET INVOLVED IN TORTOISE UPLAND CONSERVATION.
On September 19, 2006 the Board of County Commissioners of Brevard County has on the agenda to discuss tortoise conservation and intervention into Take within the county. A number of conservation groups have petitioned the board to discuss this issue. These groups include Partnership for a Sustainable Future, Inc. , Barrier Island Protection and Preservation Society,Cocoa Beach Citizens Action Committee,Florida Native Plant Society, Conradina & Sea Rocket Chapter, Friends of the Scrub, Healthy Planet of Brevard,League of Women Voters of the Space Coast, Marine Resources Council, Save the Manatee ClubSurfrider Foundation, SAVE the St. Johns River, Sea Turtle Preservation Society,, Sierra Club Turtle Coast Group, Space Coast Paddlers, Space Coast Audubon Society, Space Coast Progressive Alliance, The Friends of Enchanted Forest, Inc., Brevard Nature Alliance, and Friends of the Carr Refuge.
Ray Ashton has been invited to address the board on the subject. Anyone that is in the area is invited to attend in support of Brevard county getting involved with tortoise relocation and other means of protecting tortoises in lieu of allowing them to die on site. If you are not able to attend you are invited to write to the Brevard County Commissioners in support:

Ray will be giving a workshop to county staff and will be looking at conservation lands that are suitable for relocation. The new changes that have or are being discussed by FWC allow counties and individuals to be involved in relocation with excellent economic incentives.
